Minor HW Assignment Correction

I changed it in the post on this blog, but your handout says that you should "argue why part (b) is true for 78, 89, 90" when it should have read for "88, 89, 90". The instructions won't make sense if you try to apply them to problem 78.

See you on Monday,

First Day of School!

Great to meet everyone today. I am looking forward to working hard to challenge you and to help you succeed. It is going to be a great year.

Our first homework assignment (HW #0) is a review of a few topics that I want to make sure you have strong coverage of. These are from the Prerequisites for Calculus chapter in your book. Skim through the whole chapter, but especially make sure that you are very comfortable with these topics:
  • Section 1.3 Pg 32-33: Odd/Even Functions
  • Section 1.6 Pg 72-74: Inverses
  • Section 1.6 Pg 78: Properties of Logarithms
  • Section 1.7 Pg 81-85: Trigonometry
  • Section 1.7 Pg 88: Graphs of Trigonometric Functions
  • Section 1.7 Pg 89: Odd/Even Trigonometric Functions
  • Trigonometric Identities (Page APP4)
    • sine squared of x plus cosine squared of x and all the various manipulations
    • Angle Sum formula (pg 93) sin(A+B) and cos(A+B)
    • Angle Difference formula (pg 93) sin(A-B) and cos(A-B)
And do these problems as your homework:
  • Section 1.3 pg 41: 33-41 odd numbered problems
  • Section 1.6 pg 81: 27-31 odd problems, 33, 37, 41
  • Section 1.7 pg 99: 1-8 all, 9-17 odds only, 20, 21-24, 61. Argue why (b) is true for 88, 89, 90.
These topics and the problems will be reviewed on the second day of class (Monday 9/11/2006) and then you will be tested on this material on the following day (Tuesday 9/12/2006).

Also, make sure you bring your covered text book in on Monday so you can show me that you've got it beautifully covered.

Have a great weekend and enjoy your re-immersion in mathematics,

-Mr. Morgenbesser
